What is in the Injection
Semaglutide
How Does It Work
It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and has been found to be effective in helping with weight loss.
Appetite Regulation: Semaglutide primarily works by affecting the appetite control centers in the brain. It mimics the actions of a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is released in response to food intake and helps regulate appetite by signaling to the brain that you are full and satisfied. Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptors in the brain, leading to reduced feelings of hunger and increased feelings of fullness, which can result in decreased food intake.
Slowing Gastric Emptying: Semaglutide also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties its contents into the small intestine. This delayed gastric emptying can contribute to increased feelings of fullness and reduced appetite.
Blood Sugar Control: GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide are originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes because they help regulate blood sugar levels. By improving blood sugar control, semaglutide can indirectly lead to weight loss, as it can reduce excessive food intake due to blood sugar spikes and crashes.
It's important to note that semaglutide, when used for weight loss, is typically prescribed as part of a comprehensive weight management program that includes dietary and lifestyle modifications, such as increased physical activity and reduced calorie intake. The medication alone is not a magic solution, but rather a tool to assist individuals in achieving and maintaining weight loss.
Side Effects
Some people experience side effects with GLP-1 injections, however these tend to be mild and short term. The most common are related to an upset stomach (e.g., nausea, diarrhoea). Please read the leaflet for more information.
