Hayfever Steroid Injection

A treatment option for severe hay fever in the UK, for those who have failed to gain sufficient allergy control with over the counter or prescribed medicines

This injection does not cure hay fever. It just temporarily suppresses the immune system enough to take away the symptoms in most people who need it with many people finding the relief from symptoms commonly lasts the entire season.

Who is it for:

This service is designed for individuals who experience severe hay fever symptoms that do not respond to other treatments, such as oral antihistamines and topical eye drops. If you are seeking relief for your symptoms and have not found success with conventional treatments, you may consider requesting an appointment to discuss the suitability of a hay fever steroid injection.

Goal of therapy

Our primary objective is to help you effectively manage the symptoms of severe hay fever. For many individuals, this treatment provides complete relief throughout the entire allergy season, while for others, it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms, allowing them to resume normal activities by supplementing with other treatments as needed.

What is in injection:

The injection contains Triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties. This medication suppresses the immune system and helps regulate the exaggerated response triggered by pollen allergens.

Location of injection:

The injection is administered into the upper, outer quadrant of the buttock (gluteal) muscle. This intramuscular (IM) injection site is thoroughly cleansed with an alcohol swab prior to the procedure. The injection itself is quick and generally not very painful, as the substance used is not irritating to the tissue.

What each ingredient does

Triamcinolone acetonide acts as a potent corticosteroid that mitigates inflammation. It helps suppress the immune system's hyperactive response to pollen, providing relief from hay fever symptoms.

Potential Side Effects:

Although rare, it is important to be aware of potential side effects associated with the steroid injection. These may include:

Common side effects of Kenalog injections may include:

  • Injection site reactions: Pain at the injection site, swelling, redness, or irritation at the injection site are common and usually temporary

Less common side effects may include:

  • Changes in skin pigmentation: This may manifest as lightening or darkening of the skin around the injection site.

  • Allergic reactions: Rarely, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, which can range from mild skin rash to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe itching.

  • Localized atrophy: Prolonged or repeated use of Kenalog injections can potentially lead to thinning of the skin or subcutaneous tissue (fat pad atrophy) at the injection site.

  • Systemic effects: Although less common with local injections, the use of Kenalog injections can potentially result in systemic effects when higher doses are used or if the medication enters the bloodstream. These effects may include

    • adrenal suppression

    • Cushing's syndrome (excessive production of cortisol)

    • Increased susceptibility to infections

    • Fluid retention

    • Weight gain

    • Increased blood pressure

    • Psychiatric and psychological issues such as changes in mood or behavior

    • Osteoporosis (thinning of bones)

    • Reduced blood sugar control i.e elevated blood sugar levels (particularly in individuals with diabetes)

Please note that these side effects occur infrequently, but it is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of them before making a decision regarding the steroid injection
