Over the last few years there has been a growing interest in cosmetics and non-surgircal therapy such as Botox. With a surprising proportion of users being younger people, who are turning to preventative Botox – i.e injections you get before wrinkles really set in.

But What is preventative Botox and is it worth doing?

Unlike regular Botox, which is more about reducing the appearance of wrinkles, preventative Botox tries to stop them appearing entirely.

Preventative Botox for certain people can be a very effective way to stop very deep lines forming around the forehead and around the eyes. This is true when we understand why how wrinkles can occur.

Over time, the repeated movement of our muscles such as the frown muscle starts to cause creases in the skin – these lines worsen over time and can start to be an ageing feature of the face. As we age, those lines can go from being only present when we move (dynamic lines) to being there even when we’re at rest (static lines).

The extent of wrinkles and onset is dependant on many factors than excessive repeated use of facial muscle. Numerous factors such as genetics, smoking and sun exposure some people are much more likely to develop these lines from an early age and sometimes can even start developing deep lines in their mid twenties.

Therefore, for these cases and factors, preventative Botox can be very effective in ensuring they don’t get very deep (static) lines as they age, which are a lot harder to treat once the wrinkles become very deep.

How young, is too young?

We at GRB Health do believe there is point when preventive botox is not appropriate.

If in your teens or early 20's, when your face is still developing. Botox poses a risk to impacting collagen level developments, which it directly involved in hydration and elasticity of developing facial appearances

Therefore treatment would therefore be unnecessary, inappropriate and unethical, with better therapy and advice coming from lifestyle choices such as cutting back on sugar, alcohol and eating foods rich in vitamin C and amino acids are better preventatives than Botox in this age bracket
